Cheiracanthium C.L. Koch, 1839 - (yellow sac spiders)
This is a large genus of sac spiders with around 200 species which are mainly found in the the old world. However, the black-footed yellow sac spider (Cheiracanthium inclusum) can be common in crops in North America and is regarded there as a useful predator of various small pest insects. Some species like the African, Cheiracanthium furculatum can be found in houses and may bite humans. However, usually the bites are not painful and do not cause necrotic lesions like the bites from the recluse spiders. Normally, Cheiracanthium species stay in their sac-like webbing during the day and hunt during the night.
Cheiracanthium females are typically around 10 mm long, with long and slender forelegs, and often with black tarsi. The colouration is light brown to yellowish. There is usually a darker dorsal mark on the front part of the abdomen.
Type species: Cheiracanthium punctorium
