Chaitophorus leucomelas Koch, 1854 - (black-poplar leaf aphid)

This aphid is widely distributed and feeds on young poplar shoots. It usually colonises the underside of the leaves, but can be also found on shoots and even inside poplar galls induced by other insects. It may be attended by ants.

The wingless stage is oval and elongated. Nymphs are mostly yellowish green. Mature wingless forms have a variable colouration. A common form is yellowish green with stripes of darker marks along the sides and short, dark siphunculi. However, other colour form may be present in the same colony, including almost black forms. The winged stage has a dark, abdominal dorsal band. The males can be winged or wingless.
