Chaetopsis massyla (Walker, 1849) - (cornsilk flies)
This picture-winged fly is a pest of sweet corn in south-eastern North America (Goyal et al., 2010). The females are around 6-7 mm long. They deposit their eggs on the corn silk. The hatching larvae first feed on the silk but later also attack other parts of the ear. See also the genus Euxesta for other cornsilk flies.
C. massyla has been also reported to breed on other types of plants. It is found in eastern and southern parts of North America, as well as in Central America.
