Campuloclinium macrocephalum (weed) (Less.) D.C. - (pompom weed)

The weed is native to South and Central America and invasive in South Africa (first record in 1962). It grows mainly in grasslands, savannas and wetland environments, affecting grazing and replacing native vegetation. Since mechanical and chemical control methods are uneconomical on a large scale, research has focused on finding suitable biological control agents.

The plant grows to a height of more than 1 m and dies off during the dry winter. It has a short woody and tuberous rootstock that re-sprouts in the spring. The flower heads are pink and the seeds are elongated and bear a pappus.

Synonyms:
Eupatorium macrocephalum
