Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood, 1912) - (American bean thrips)

This thrips is found from southern North America to Argentina. It is common on beans in South America and the feeding results in white markings on the upper surface of the leaves. Heavily attacked young leaves become brittle and dry. It also attacks various other crops like soybeans. Crop losses may exceed 10%.

The adults are around 1½ mm long, dark brown to black in colour with white sections on the wings and legs. Differences in the colouration have been described between the forms found in North and South America and the South American form has been previously regarded as a separate species (Caliothrips braziliensis).
