Field trials with various dry baits against the Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.)
Bulletin of Entomological Research 42 (4), 691-696
Abstract: Field trials carried out in the Sudan have shown that there is little difference in acceptability to locusts between samples of crushed dura differing in partice size and wheat bran when these substances are used as carrier material for dry bait containing 2.5% sodium arsenite or 0.5% benzene hexachloride. The medium and bran fractions may be rather more acceptable and are less likely to be blown away. It is suggested that it might be worth while to fractionate crushed dura to separate flour fit for human consumption from the coarser fractions for use in bait. Of all the materials tested only maize bran containing 2.5% sodium arsenite was significantly less acceptable than the rest, though it was equally toxic to the locusts.
