Abstract: In the median neurosecretory cells of the pars intercerebralis of Locusta migratoria there are two zones, one central (AB) and another peripheral (C). It is possible to destroy one or the other by electrocoagulation (which-is more precise than cauterization) and so to determine their respective functions. Electrocoagulation of the AB zone had the same effect as implantation of corpora allata, i.e. it inhibited metamorphosis. Similar destruction of the C zone had the reverse effect, inducing the development of prothetelic adults. It is therefore concluded that these two neurosecretory centres together control the activities in respect of metamorphosis, the one centre being inhibitory and the other stimulative. It was further tentatively concluded that the C cells are concerned, independently of the corpora allata, with the production of a colour-darkening factor. This paper completes work recorded in a series of papers from 1962 to 1966.
