Bruchus rufimanus Boheman, 1833 - (bean beetle)

This beetle is common in Europe and is also found in other regions. It attacks the developing seeds of faba beans (Vicia faba), common beans, peas and other legumes. Infestation levels of seeds can reach up to 50% after harvest (Matlosz & Kaniuczak, 1996). However, B. rufimanus usually does not lay eggs on stored seeds and few beetles survive storage conditions.

The adult beetles overwinter in leaf litter, under the bark of trees or in seeds fallen to the ground. They emerge in spring. The females lay their eggs on the outside of the young pods and the hatching larvae bore into the pods and the developing seeds. Several larvae can be found in a single seed. Adult beetles feed on pollen and nectar.

Vernacular names
• Deutsch: Pferdebohnenkäfer
Bohnensamenkäfer
Ackerbohnenkäfer
• English: bean beetle
broadbean weevil
• Español: gorgojo del haba
• Français: bruche de la fève

Management options include spraying of young pods, fumigation of stored seeds and seed dressing with insecticides (e.g. see Kaniuczak & Matlosz, 1998).

Adult beetles are around 4-5 mm long and compact. Their basic colour is greyish brown with some diffuse lighter or darker patches. The first 4 antennal segments and the front legs are reddish brown.
