Bovicola bovis (Linnaeus 1758) - (cattle-biting louse)

This species of chewing lice is widely distributed and infests cattle. The lice feed on the hair and the outer layer of the skin. The impact on the host is less severe compared to infestations by blood-sucking lice like Haematopinus eurysternus. However, heavy infestations by B. bovis can still cause irritation in cattle.

The fully grown louse is around 2 mm long and reddish brown to yellowish. There are several generations per year, with one life-cycle lasting around 2-3 weeks.

Synonyms:
Damalinia bovis
