Botrytis squamosa J.C. Walker 1925
This fungus is widely distributed and causes leaf blight of onions. Symptoms start as small white lesions on the leaves surrounded by a greenish halo. These expand and become straw-coloured spots. In a second stage, the leaves become blighted. The disease results in smaller bulbs and yield losses of up to 30%.
The fungus overwinters as sclerotia on plant debris. These can survive for about 2 years. They typically germinate in spring and the fungus forms conidia that infect the new crop.
