Botrytis aclada Fresen. 1850

This fungus is widely distributed and causes neck rot of onions, a disease also caused by Botrytis allii and other species. The bulbs become infected in the field when onions are harvested too early and are not cured and dried properly. Infected bulbs start to rot in storage and yield losses may reach 30%. Rotting of the bulbs begins at the necks where the scales become water-soaked. The fungus will eventually produce sclerotia and spores on the surface of the bulbs.
