The hibiscus chlorotic ringspot virus infects the ornamental plant Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and the related Abelmoschus manihot. It has been found in various countries around the world. The symptoms include mottling, chlorotic ring spots and vein-banding on the leaves, as well as stunting and flower distortion. The virus can be transmitted mechanically and apparently spreads through the transport of infected planting material.
HCRSV has icosahedral particles, approximately 30 nm in diameter. It has a positive-sense monopartite single-stranded RNA genome with 3,911 nucleotides and 4 open reading frames.
