Azolla (weeds) Lam. - (mosquito ferns)

The genus Azolla currently contains 3 species of floating ferns. The plants are small and moss-like. In contrast to the related genus Salvinia, they have very small leaves that lack hairs.

They live symbiotically with nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae and for that reason are of interest as an organic fertilizer in rice fields. However, they are also considered weeds, especially where they have been introduced outside their native range.
