Atherigona oryzae Malloch, 1925 - (rice shoot fly, rice seedling maggot)
This shoot fly is an important pest of rice in southern Asia. It attacks the shoots of upland rice, not paddy rice planted in water. Female flies lay their eggs on the leaves of young rice seedlings, shortly after planting. The hatching larvae move down between the leaf sheath and the stem and bore into the stem, eventually destroying the growing point and causing dead-hearts. Young maize plants and other cereals can be also infested. The mature larvae leave the host plant and pupate in the soil. One generation last around 3-4 weeks. The adult fly has a length of about 3 mm, with a yellowish gray colour and two or three pairs of dorsal black spots on the abdomen.
