Ascovirus sfav1a (entomopathogen)

Assigned virus:
Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus 1a (SfAV-1a)

Several closely related ascoviruses have been described in the group "Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus 1". These are named Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus 1a, 1b, 1c, etc. and have been isolated from Spodoptera frugiperda in North America. Like in other ascoviruses, insect hosts can be infected by pricking them with a needle contaminated with virus particles. Apart from Spodoptera species, there are reports that other Noctuidae can also become infected with these viruses. The viruses multiply in the cytoplasm of the fat body cells.
