Systemic resistance induced by Trichoderma harzianum and Glomus mosseae on cucumber damping-off disease caused by Phytophthora melonis

Abstract: In this research, induced systemic resistance on cucumber damping-off disease caused by Phytophthora melonis was assayed using two fungal bio-control agents including commercial inoculants of Glomus mosseae and Trichoderma harzianum Rifai (Bioplus). Changes in defensive enzymes activities, total phenolic content and transcript levels of some defence-related genes were investigated. The results of biochemical analysis showed that enzyme activity increased in the treated plants compared to control plants. The highest change in enzyme activity from both bi-fertilisers was recorded at 72 h post inoculation (hpi). Gene expression analysis revealed that the transcription level of four defensive genes, including Phenylalanine Ammonialyase, Cucumber pathogen-induced 4, Lipoxygenase and Galactinol synthase were similarly increased in both treatments. In total, T. harzianum was more effective than G. mosseae in resistance induction. In conclusion, both bio-fertilisers were able to induce resistance in cucumber and are suitable candidates to control the disease.
