Aptinothrips rufus Haliday 1836 - (red grass thrips, European wingless grass thrips)

This thrips is believed to be native to Europe and neighbouring regions. It has spread to other countries and is now widespread in temperate regions. It feeds and breeds on the leaves of grasses and cereals. High populations can result in economic damage.

The thrips is around 1.5 mm long, slender, yellowish-brown and wingless. During an extensive survey in grasses in Europe and North America, A. rufus was found to reproduce mainly asexually and few males were recorded (van der Kooi & Schwander, 2014).
