Aphis punicae Passerini, 1863 - (pomegranate aphid)

This aphid is found in the eastern Mediterranean region and in western Asia. There are also some reports from eastern Asia (e.g. see Sugimoto, 2011) but it appears to be rare in that region. The aphid sucks the leaves, flowers and fruits of pomegranate trees. In the Mediterranean/western Asia region A. punicae is regarded as a pest, reducing the yield and quality of commercially grown pomegranate trees. Through honeydew production it also promotes the growth of mould on the leaves and fruits. For management, mainly pesticides as used.
