Abstract: In years with a warm summer the broad bean beetle has a great influence on the production of faba bean seed. Laboratory investigations have shown that the germination rate of normal and affected seeds are equal. It was found that the germination growth rate, the weight of seedlings and the length of roots and shoots of the seedlings was influenced in positive way if the seed had beetle damage. This could be caused by an improved water take-up of the damaged seeds. Field investigations had shown that the germination rate and the length of the shoots after flowering are nearly equal, but the yields of plants from damage beans were lower. It is nessesary to improve our knowledge on the co-evolution of certain Fabaceae with Bruchidae. The results could lead to better understanding of the damage potential of this group of seed beetles.
