Studies on numbers and mortality in field populations of the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskal)
Anti-Locust Bulletin 38, 1-59
Abstract: Solitary locust females laid 95 to 128 eggs per pod. Females from swarming populations laid 81 eggs per pod in average. If a third laying took place, than there was a further reduction in the numbers of eggs. In a season of low rainfall and poor vegetation the number of eggs was reduced. Average hopper densities for different situations during the day, different vegetation types and instar are given. Hopper mortality was caused by cannibalism even if there was enough food. Predators, especially birds destroyed hopper bands complety. Cannibalism occures when older hatchlings devoured newly hatched ones. This was observed if rainfall was low.
