Anabrus simplex Haldeman - (Mormon cricket)
This species is a polyphagous, wingless long-horned grasshopper (not a cricket) in western North America. The grasshoppers migrate by walking in gregarious groups and damage crops and rangeland. Small grains, alfalfa or other crops may be completely destroyed by the migrating bands. The eggs are laid in the soil during the summer and hatch during the coming spring. However, hatching may be delayed for several years in high altitude environments. The 7 nymphal stages develop over a period of 2-3 months. The adults are large, up to 7 cm long.
