Alternaria saponariae (Peck) Neerg. 1938

This fungus causes leaf spot diseases on plants of the genus Saponaria. The spots are brown and circular with concentric zones and surrounded by chlorotic borders. In California, an outbreaks in 1998 has devastated a whole saponaria crop, grown for the cut flower market (Koike et al., 1999). A. saponariae belongs to the Gypsophilae section of Alternaria species.
