Alternaria atra (Preuss) Woudenb. & Crous 2013 - (potato leaf blight)

This fungus is widely distributed. It has been recorded as a plant pathogen, causing leaf spot and blight diseases on various crops like potatoes. However, several strains are better known as being antagonistic to other plant diseases, for example to Botrytis cinerea on strawberries (see Alternaria atra as antagonist).

On potatoes, symptoms often start at the edges of the leaves as small brown or black lesions. These enlarge to irregular patches and can cover most of the leaves, resulting in leaf blight. The disease is economically important in some countries.
