Aleurotrachelus atratus Hempel, 1922
This is one of several species of whiteflies which infests palm trees. It is native to South and Central America and has spread to parts of Africa, the Pacific, Asia and Europe. For example, it was first recorded in western Africa from the Canary Islands (1998), in the Indian Ocean from the Comoros Islands (2002), in the Pacific from Hawaii (2006), and in Asia from India (2019).
Coconut palms are the most common and the most seriously affected host plants. Outbreaks in some areas like Indian Ocean islands have caused considerable damage, up to death of palm trees. In the Comoros Islands, the economic losses on coconut palms were estimated at around 50% in 2002.
For a review see Borowiec et al. (2010).
