This whitefly is extremely polyphagous and has a world-wide distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. Its is believed to be native in Central and South America. It has expanded its distribution since the 1960s when it was found in the Canary Islands. Many countries were invaded subsequently. More recent introductions include the Seychelle Islands in 2003 and Hainan Island (southern China) in 2006. Outbreaks are typically very serious during the first years following a new introduction.
