Ahasverus advena (Waltl, 1832) - (foreign grain beetle)

This beetle is common in mouldy stored products, but usually feeds only on the mould (e.g. Penicillium, Aspergillus). Therefore, it is sometimes regarded as beneficial (e.g. for removing the mould from copra). It has been also reported from stored soybean meal.

A. advena is believed to be native to South America, but is now widely distributed in tropical regions and is also found in grain stores in temperate parts of the world. The adult beetle is 2-2½ mm long, rust coloured and slightly glossy, It shows some similarities to the rusty grain beetle, Cryptolestes ferrugineus.
