[The effects of flight on sexual maturation and reproduction of the Oriental Migratory Locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis Meyen]
Acta Entomologica Sinica 13 (5), 765-767
Abstract: Groups of 7-day-old gregarious females of Locusta migratoria manilensis were subjected to stimulated flight for periods varying from 2½-7½ hours. In comparison with control insects, the fliers had larger eggs and ovarioles, and laid their eggs slightly earlier. Their egg-laying capacity, (that is, number of eggs laid per locust), was not markedly different from that of the controls. Flight appears to have the effect of definitely promoting sexual maturation.
