Studies on the reproduction of the Oriental Migratory Locust: the physiological effect of the pairing action
Acta Entomologica Sinica 11 (3), 217-222
Abstract: Females of Locusta migratoria manilensis were paired with males deprived of their external copulatioy organs. The males readily mounted the backs of the females, but were unable to carry out actual copulation. The percentage of eggs hatching from such females was less than that of females mated with normal males, but more than that of parthenogenetic females. It is thought that the mechanical and chemical stimuli of the pairing action, received by the sensory receptors of the female, would act on the brain and endocrine system, and thus affect egg maturation and egg laying.
