[A preliminary investigation on the wing frequency of the Oriental Migratory Locust]
Acta Entomologica Sinica 10 (4), 436-438
Abstract: The wingbeat frequency of Locusta migratoria manilensis was determined in the laboratory by means of a stroboscope. Results showed that recently-emerged adults had a weaker flight than those whose wings had hardened and were stronger. Males showed a slightly higher wingbeat frequency than females. In the field, locusts were observed to be incapable of flight for one or two days after acquiring their wings, whilst sustained flight was only possible about a week later. This can continue to the eve of sexual maturity. Laboratory experiments were found to support observations made in the field.
