Biological observations on the reproduction of the Oriental Migratory Locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis Mayen (Orthoptera, Acrididae)
Acta Entomologica Sinica 6 (2), 145-167
Abstract: Locusta migratoria manilensis was studied in its outbreak centre of the lake regions of Kiangsu, Anhwei and Shantung Provinces of China, and, in the laboratory. During development of the female gonads masses of red pigment were detected in the ovarioles and it is believed that they are intimately related to growth and maturation of the oocytes but that they are not corpora lutea. Observations on pre-copulatory behaviour, oviposition general fecundity and egg viability are given. Parthenogenesis occurred, but the eggs so produced have low viability, the progeny are all females, and the pre-oviposition period of the virgin females is prolonged.
