Acromyrmex Mayr, 1865
This genus contains around 30 species of leaf-cutting ants which are found in South and Central America. They attack trees like eucalypt or citrus but also grasses. Like leaf-cutting ants from the related genus Atta they build underground nests where they culture certain species of fungi on the harvested leaves. These fungi are subsequently used as food.
The species are brownish red and the thorax is often armed with prominent spines. The species of Acromyrmex can be distinguishes from those of Atta by 4 pairs of spines on the thorax.
