Acrobasis nuxvorella Neunzig, 1970 - (pecan nut casebearer)

The moth is an indigenous pest of pecan in southern North America. The larvae feed inside its webbing and also bore into the developing buds and nutlets of pecan trees. During outbreaks, they can cause considerable yield losses. A single larva may destroy all nuts in a cluster. The adult is about 8 mm long and dark-gray. The total life cycle from egg over 4 larval stages to mature adult lasts about 1½ months. There are 3 to 4 generations per year. In the last generation, the newly hatched larvae overwinter inside a refuge constructed from silk and bark, which is attached to a dormant pecan bud. Careful monitoring with pheromone traps is recommended before the application of pesticides.
