Isolation of moulting hormones from the Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal)

Abstract: A systematic investigation of the moulting hormones of Schistocerca gregaria using a sensitive bioassay on ligatured abdomens of the same species has led to the isolation of 20-hydroxyecdysone. We have also found two other substances, which have been partially purified, and which appear to be the same as two active substances from the prothoracic gland. No ecdysone was detectable at any time from the fourth-to-fifth instar moult, through the fifth instar, into the adult stage.
Des Schistocerca gregaria dont l'abdomen a été isolé du reste du corps par une ligature ont permis d'obtenir des cristaux de 20-hydroxyecdysone. Deux autres substances ont été également isolées puis purifiées. Elles présentent les mêmes caractéristiques que deux substances extraites de la glande prothoracique. La présence d'ecdysone n'a jamais été détectée chez la larve du 5e stade ni chez le jeune imago.
