Abstract: The rate of hearbeat in fourth and fifth instars and in adult Schistocerca gregaria of both sexes reared at 28 ± 1 °C and in 12/12 photoperiods was measured at the end of the dark period.
The heart beats faster at the beginning of each larval instar and the mean rate of the heartbeat is lower in the fifth than in the fourth larval instars. In the adult stage, the frequency of beating decreases between the first and the fifth day and tends to be stable up to the thirtieth day. However, the rate of heartbeat is different in the two sexes from the first to the fifteenth day at least.
The quality of the food does not seem to influence the rate of heartbeat. In general, relative humidity has only a weak and variable effect on the heartbeat, depending on the sex and time of exposure.
Chez Schistocerca gregaria, le rythme cardiaque des stades larvaires IV et V et des imagos des deux sexes élevés à une température de 28 ± 1 °C et en jours courts (12 heures) a été mesuré à la fin de la période nocturne.
Le coeur bat plus vite au début du stade larvaire et la valeur moyenne du rythme cardiaque est moins élevée au stade V qu'au stade IV. Ce rythme diminue au cours des cinq premiers jours de la vie imaginale puis tend à se stabiliser jusqu'au trentième jour. Le rythme cardiaque des mâles est toutefois supérieur à celui des femelles, du moins pendant les quinze premiers jours.
La qualité de la nourriture ne paraît pas intervenir et l'action de l'humidité relative n'est que faible; les variations observées dépendraient du sexe et du temps d'exposition à l'humidité.
