Acantholyda erythrocephala (Linnaeus) - (pine false webworm)

This sawfly is native to Europe and was accidentally introduced into North America. It attacks several species of pines. The adults lay eggs in the spring and the young larvae feed first gregariously on pine needles and spin webs. The older larvae live singly and construct silken tubes. When mature they drop to the ground and build an underground cell for pupation. They overwinter as prepupae and pupate in spring.
