This genus of web-spinning sawflies contains more than 50 species which feed on conifers. Most are found in temperate regions of North America, Asia and Europe. The larva feed gregariously or singly on the needles of conifers and may construct silken nests. Several species are pests of pine trees like the pine false webworm, Acantholyda erythrocephala, which is native to Europe but has spread to North America.
