Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd)

The viroid causes an important disease of avocado in various avocado growing regions. Yield losses of 50% and more are common. The main symptoms are deep yellow streaks on the fruits of infected trees which can become reddish and necrotic. Rarely chlorotic areas appear on the leaves. Many infected trees also remain symptomless and only show a yield reduction. The viroid can be transmitted mechanically (e.g. grafting), by seeds and probably also through pollen. Management involves the use of viroid free planting materials.

The viroid replicates in the chloroplasts and typically contains 247 nucleotides. It is the type species of the genus Avsunviroid and the family Avsunviroidae.
