Stephanitis pyri (Fabricius, 1775) - (pear lace bug)

This lace bug is common in Europe and neighbouring countries. It feeds and breeds on the leaves of various fruit trees like pear, apple and Prunus species. Other types of trees and ornamentals may be also infested. The lace bug is found on the underside of the leaves and young leaves are preferred. The feeding activities result in characteristic spotting of the leaves and high densities can result in leaves dropping and buds not being able to develop.

Adult bugs overwinter and in spring, females insert their eggs into the leaf mesophyll. There are 5 nymphal stages and one generation is completed in about 4 weeks under ideal conditions. In the Mediterranean region, there are three generations per year. The adult bugs have a length of around 3 mm.
