Puccinia hordei G.H. Otth 1870 - (brown rust of barley)
The fungus has a worldwide distribution and is common on barley during warm and dry years. Infections are characterized by round, brownish to orange uredia on both surfaces of the leaves. Yield losses of around 10% have been reported, but can also reach of up to 60% in some countries. In Australia alone, annual yield losses due to the pathogen have been estimated at $ 21 million.
Management involves the use of resistant cultivars. However, new, resistant-breaking pathotypes are emerging. The fungus is air-borne and overwinters on alternate hosts or on winter barley.
Urediniospores are elliptical and measure approximately 20-30 x 20 µm. Teliospores are brown to black and approximately 46 x 22 µm large. Basidiospores have a size of 12 x 7 µm.

Sexual reproduction occurs on species of Ornithogalum or other Liliaceae. The pycniospores are about 4 x 2 µm large. Aecia are globose with a round opening. Aeciospores are nearly spherical, about 20-25 µm in diameter.
