Ommatissus lybicus de Bergevin, 1930 - (old world date bug, dubas bug, date palm hopper)
This planthopper is an important pest of date palms in western Asia and northern Africa. The feeding activities of the nymphs and adults cause sooty mould on the leaves. Yield losses have been reported to reach 50% during serious outbreaks and the damage might even result in the death of trees. The insect completes two generations per year and overwinters as eggs. This species is sometimes referred to as Ommatissus binotatus (a different species) or as Ommatissus binotatus lybicus.
