Field evaluation of ovipositional repellents against Culex (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes
Environmental Entomology 11 (4), 968-971
Abstract: Straight-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids in the C8 to C10 range are known to be effective ovipositional repellents under laboratory conditions. Under semi-field conditions, octanoic acid (C8) was tested in sheet metal cylinders in experimental ponds. Results showed that at a concentration of 15-ppm octanoic acid was effective in repelling ovipositing mosquitoes. Under field conditions, nonanoic acid (C9) was tested in whole experimental ponds at several concentrations. Complete ovipositional repellency was achieved for 1 day at 25 ppm, 2 days at 50 ppm, about 5 days at 75 ppm, and about 6 to 7 days at 150 ppm.
