Aedes koreicus (Edwards, 1917)
The mosquito is native to far eastern Asia (Korea, China, Japan, and neighbouring parts of Russia) and has been reported from Europe since 2011 (firstly recorded in Italy). It has subsequently colonized countries in Central Europe and spread east reaching Kazakhstan in Central Asia by 2018 (Andreeva et al., 2021).
A. koreicus is adapted to temperate environments and produces cold- and drought resistant eggs. A. koreicus breeds in containers and is often common in urban environments. It is suspected to be a vector of Dirofilaria immitis, the agent of canine heartworm disease.
