Cripavirus grylli (entomopathogen)

Assigned virus:
cricket paralysis virus (CrPV)

The cricket paralysis virus was originally described from a rearing of Teleogryllus commodus where it caused paralysis and high mortality in the crickets. There are several reports of outbreaks in other cricket rearings. The virus was later found to be not only infectious to various species of crickets but also to insects from unrelated groups like the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata.

The virus is the type species for the genus Cripavirus as well as the family Dicistroviridae. The particles are icosahedral and about 27 nm in diameter. Like other cripaviruses, it has four coat proteins and a monopartite, linear ssRNA(+) genome with a size of around 9 kb.
