Deltabaculovirus cunigripalpi (entomopathogen)

• Culex nigripalpus nucleopolyhedrovirus (CuniNPV)

The Culex nigripalpus nucleopolyhedrovirus infects the larvae of different species of Culex mosquitoes and is of interest as a possible biological control agent of Culex vectors. Development of CuiNPV is restricted to the nuclei of the midgut epithelial cells in the gastric caeca and posterior region of the stomach of host larvae.

The occlusion bodies are found exclusively within the nuclei of infected cells, but unlike NPVs from lepidopteran hosts, they are globular in shape, not polyhedral, and they lack the polyhedron envelope. They show some similarities to the inclusion bodies of granuloviruses but contain 4-8 virions. For more details see Andreadis et al. (2003).
