Aphytis Howard 1900

This is a large genus of ectoparasitoids of armored scale insects with more than 100 species. The eggs are usually laid under the ventral side of the scale. The females have a synovigenic form of reproduction, that means a small portion of its eggs are already mature shortly after moulting from the pupa. Additional eggs are produced throughout its lifetime after feeding on honeydew and scale hemolymph. The adults are very small, about 1 mm long and yellowish in colouration.

Type species: Aphytis chilensis.
