Cordyceps fumosorosea (Wize) Kepler, B. Shrestha & Spatafora 2017 (for pest control)
This fungus infects a large variety of different insect groups, but is especially effective against aphids and whiteflies. It is, for example, a promising biocontrol agent against Bemisia tabaci. It is produced commercially and can be cultured both on solid media, producing conidia, as well as in liquid media, where it forms blastospores. The production in liquid media is more efficient and less labour intensive. While blastospores can normally not be dried, desiccation-tolerant blastospores can be produced with certain techniques.
C. fumosorosea is often found in soil samples in temperate and subtropical regions. Genetic analyses have separated the fungus into 3 or more groups which are considered to form a species complex. Like several other entomopathogenic fungi, it produces beauvericin for overcoming the host defence system.
