Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozetti, 1867) - (longtailed mealybug)
This is a widespread and polyphagous mealybug. It feeds on various parts of its host plants, including leaves, fruits and roots. In particular, fruit trees (e.g. citrus) and ornamental plants are damaged. As part of the infestation, sooty mould often grows on the excreted honeydew. It is also a vector of virus diseases like Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3.
Females develop through 3 nymphal stages which take 3-4 weeks . They live upt to 3 months and are about 4-5 mm long. The colour under the wax excretions is variably yellowish, grayish or light pinkish-purple. The much smaller winged males develop through 4 nymphal stages.
