Lettuce chlorosis virus (LCV)
This virus is widely distributed and infects lettuce as well as various other crops. On lettuce, the symptoms include yellowing and head deformation if the infection occurs early in the growing season. In the latter case the economic impact of the virus can be significant. The virus is transmitted by several biotypes of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci and insecticide applications can minimize the virus incidence.
Like other criniviruses, LCV has a linear, single-stranded positive-sensed and bipartite RNA genome. The 2 RNA molecules (RNA1 and RNA2) are enclosed in individual particles, around 800–850 × 12 nm large. The whole genome has a size of 17-kb, with RNA1 encoding 4 proteins and RNA2 10 (Tzanetakis et al., 2013).
