Heilipus lauri Boheman, 1845

This weevil attacks fruits of avocado and other Persea species in parts of Central America and in Colombia. H. lauri is one of a number of pest species that restrict the export of avocado to other countries, as it can be introduced into other countries with infested fruits.

The female prepares a hole in the fruit for depositing its eggs. The emerging larvae feed on the fruit and the seed, often resulting in premature fruit drop. High yield losses have been reported from Colombia, up to 60%.

Vernacular names
• English: big avocado seed weevil
• Español: gran gorgojo de semilla de aguacate

Adult weevils are around 12-15 mm long and reddish brown to black.
