Apomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller, 1839) - (carob moth)
This polyphagous moth is found in tropical and subtropical areas like the Mediterranean region or southern North America. It attacks mainly nuts and fruits like pistachio or pomegranate. Damage can be substantial. For example on pomegranate fruit losses can exceed 50%. It is also a pest of stored products.
The female lays eggs around the calyx of the fruits and the hatching larvae bore into and develop inside the fruits. In autumn, the larvae go into diapause inside those fruits that have remained on the tree or fallen to the ground. In spring, they pupate and emergence of the young adults coincides with the flowering of the trees.
